How to Host the Perfect Pre-Match Gathering

A proper pre-match gathering comes down to four things: good company, cold beer, somewhere comfortable to watch, and something to eat. Get those right and you’re sorted. All you need now is the result you want.

At Tennent’s, we’ve been part of Scottish football culture for as long as we’ve been brewing. As an official partner of the Scotland National Team, our relationship with the beautiful game goes back almost half a century, to the 1974 World Cup in West Germany.

We’re the leading lager you’ll find in nearly every pub on matchday. Football and a cold pint of T go hand in hand. Anyway, here’s how to set up a gathering that’s worth showing up early for.

The Pre-Match Ritual

There’s something about the hour before kickoff that’s hard to replicate. The group chat starts buzzing with predictions. Someone arrives early with strong opinions about the starting lineup. The telly goes on 20 minutes before the whistle and nobody can sit still.

That build-up is half the point. The pre-match gathering isn’t just about watching football. It’s about the patter, the nerves, the optimism, or pessimism… Getting everyone in the same room before kickoff turns a game into an event.

What to Serve: Beer, Food, and Keeping Everyone Happy

The food doesn’t need to be complicated. You’ll know what the guests want better than we do. Think pizza, nachos, crisps, or a chippy. Anything you can eat with one hand and one eye on the screen is ideal.

The beer is where it matters. Having a few options means everyone’s covered. Here’s what we’d suggest from the Tennent’s range.

A Tennent’s for Every Guest

  • Tennent’s Lager is the one most people will reach for. The classic yellow tin. Scotland’s best-selling lager at 4.0% ABV: crisp, clean, and brewed at Wellpark Brewery in Glasgow with 100% Scottish malt and Loch Katrine water.
  • Tennent’s Tops is our limited-edition citrus lager at 3.4% ABV. Same Scottish malt, same Loch Katrine water, but with a zesty lemon twist and slightly higher carbonation. Worth picking up while it’s still available.
  • is brewed for those keeping an eye on the calories. At 3.5% ABV and with 30% fewer calories than Tennent’s Lager, it’s a solid shout if you just prefer something a wee bit lighter, it’s also gluten free! Same Scottish malt, same Loch Katrine water, still very much a Tennent’s.
  • For anyone not drinking, Tennent’s Zero is brewed to 0.0% ABV with the same familiar taste. Designated drivers, early starts, or just fancying a night off…

The Last-Minute Gathering

Not every gathering is planned a week in advance. Sometimes the group chat fires up two hours before kickoff and suddenly you’re hosting.

The good news: you don’t need much. A screen, a few mates, and cold beer. Look at the Tennent’s line up from your local shop, throw some crisps in a bowl, and you’re set. The best pre-match gatherings are the ones planned at the last second.

The Unwritten Rules of the Pre-Match Gathering

Every gathering has them. Nobody writes them down, but everyone knows the score.

  • The host controls the remote. No exceptions. If someone else wants to flick between channels, they can host next time.
  • The person who didn’t bring anything does the tidying up. Non-negotiable. You know who you are.
  • Half-time is for opinions, not channel-hopping. The pundits can wait. The real analysis happens on your sofa.
