Tennent’s Tops: Scotland’s Favourite Lager With a Citrus Twist
We’ve just launched something new at Wellpark. Tennent’s Tops is a limited-edition citrus lager that takes the iconic taste of Tennent’s Lager and adds a fresh, zesty edge. Same Scottish malt. Same Loch Katrine water. Just with a bright lemon twist and a wee bit more fizz.
Tennent’s Tops lager is available now but it will not be around forever. Here’s everything you need to know.
A Fresh Take on an Old Favourite
Tennent’s has been Scotland’s best-selling lager since 1885. That’s not something you mess with lightly.
The foundations are exactly the same with Tops: soft Highland water from Loch Katrine, the finest Scottish malt, and the brewing expertise that Wellpark is well known for.
What’s new is the citrus layer sitting on top of all that. Tops has been brewed with a zesty lemon character that comes through clean and bright, balanced by a subtle sweetness that keeps it from ever tipping into soft-drink territory.
When you take a sip, you can expect familiar Tennent’s notes, but with a slight lemony twang. Our brewery team puts it simply:

What Does It Actually Taste Like?
It’s crisp, light, and zesty from the first sip. The lemon comes through cleanly on the tongue without being sharp or artificial. There is a subtle sweetness underneath that rounds things out, and the hop bitterness gives it that satisfying finish that lingers without overpowering.
The slightly higher carbonation compared to the original keeps things lively. You will notice that each sip feels refreshing and less heavy.
Tennent’s Tops goes down a treat with food. The citrus character cuts through spice brilliantly, so dishes like Thai green curry or anything with heat are a natural match. It works just as well alongside fish and chips, sushi, or even a sharp lemon tart if you are in the mood for something sweet.
If you know Tennent’s Lager, you will recognise Tops immediately. If you are new to it, this is a solid place to start. Our brewery team puts it simply:
“Tops is a very moreish, very modern twist on its phenomenally successful parent beer. The citrus flavours tingle on the tongue in perfect harmony with the beer’s lingering bitterness from the finest hand-picked bittering hops. We increased the carbonation ever so slightly, and this really helps release the citrus flavours. To balance the kick from the hops and the lemon, Tops has a subtle sweetness. Not too much, just enough to make this an exceptionally well-balanced citrus beer.”
